Welcome to ASCN UK newsletter for February 2018.  Through our newsletters, ASCN UK aims to bring you updates from the Association, the latest Annual Conference activity as well as updates from across the stoma care community that we think our members might like to be informed of.  We hope you will find this newsletter to be a great source of useful information. It is also a reminder that this year’s conference is drawing near and I hope that we will see as many of you as possible and that your own arrangements are underway. 2018 Annual Conference News

As you receive this, there are just 194 days until this year’s Annual Conference, for which planning is already well underway!
 
The 2018 Conference will be held at the ICC, Birmingham with this year’s theme being ‘Breaking Barriers and Enhancing Relationships’.  The focus of our conference will address the issues surrounding healthy relationships for all who are affected by and operate within, the stoma care community.  The conference will once again build on our success to date, to showcase innovative research and best clinical practice in stoma care, from across the UK.  We would like to share with you that we have some great keynote speakers lined up for our 2018 conference.  They include an innovative and exciting speaker who is a psychosexual nurse specialist, eminent colorectal surgeons and our very own peers who are raising the profile in the care of patients with dementia.  So, watch this space and we will be bringing you more on this in the very near future ……..

Submit an Abstract to the Annual Conference


This is your chance to share the great work and developments you have achieved in your own practice.  The ASCN UK Annual Conference is the only forum that enables sharing of best practice from across the UK. With the largest attendance of SCN’s in one room, what better opportunity for you to promote your service or research and demonstrate this as part of your CPD.
 
The submission system for the ASCN UK 2018 Annual Conference is now open. Abstracts must be submitted no later than 1st June 2018.
 
Abstracts are invited on all aspects of stoma care, including:

Safeguarding Questionnaire 


Safeguarding has been high on the agenda for ASCN UK, but unfortunately due to the high quality and volume of abstracts last year we were unable to include anything on the programme in 2017. In preparation for the 2018 conference, we would very much appreciate if you could spend a few moments answering the following baseline questions on safeguarding.

Urology Masterclass - Monday 21st May

 
Following the huge success of our 2017 Urology Masterclass in Birmingham, we are delighted to announce we will be running the Masterclass again on 21st May at the New Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.  Attendance is limited to 40 places and is free of charge to ASCN UK Members.  We are delighted to offer priority attendance to ASCN UK Members.  Please note that after 12 March, registration for the Masterclass will be opened up to non-members at £20 per attendee, so book early!

A refresh on the MedTech Guidelines


MedTech Europe Code of Ethical Business practice sets strict, clear and transparent rules for industry‘s relationship with health care professionals (HCP’s) and health care organisations (HCO’s), including support to company organised events, research and financial support to medical education.  For details on how to obtain Funding for Education and other CPD activities from 1st January 2018, click here to download the BHTA Flyer ASCN UK  .

Glucodrate Withdrawal

 
Glucodrate is a food for special medical purposes for use in the dietary management of short bowel-associated intestinal failure and intestinal insufficiency in adults.  Glucodrate was approved by ACBS in March 2016 and launched in the UK in January 2017.  It has now been withdrawn from the market, effective Monday 5 February 2018. Book Launch - Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP)


We wish to highlight to our members, a recently published book, available in UK and Ireland, by a young lady who suffers from the rare genetic condition, Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP).  The book is a from the heart description of her thoughts and feelings as she came to the realisation that her life was going to perhaps follow a much different path from the one that she had envisaged.
